Several Hazmat Response Team vehicles were called to Kingsgate Mall in Vancouver Saturday afternoon for what turned out to be odour from a sewer.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Chief Karen Fry says they were called shortly after noon after the notification of a situation involving an odour at the shopping centre, located on East Broadway near Kingsway.

FortisBC was called in to investigate to determine if there was a gas leak.

“Crews upgraded this incident to a HazMat incident and evacuated the mall while waiting for Fortis to arrive,” Fry said.

“Investigations with Fortis determined this was not a gas leak, but odour coming from the sewer. It is non-toxic in nature.”

Callers reported a significant presence of emergency vehicles on the scene.

Fry says the incident has concluded, and no injuries have been reported.
