Assistant fire chief Joe Mora tells CityNews that when crews arrived, it was determined that a person was inside the house.

“They immediately went into rescue mode; they did recover somebody from the inside of the house.”

Two other people managed to get out of the house in time.

The BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) also responded to the house fire with four ambulances, and paramedics provided emergency medical treatment.

However, one person had succumbed to their injuries, according to Mora.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

According to BFD, heavy smoke and fire damaged the house.

“Once they got the person out, they knocked it down very quickly,” Mora added.

The Burnaby RCMP says that road closures were in effect around the area, which have since reopened.
