SFS assistant chief Mike McNamara told 1130 NewsRadio that the fire started in a storage room.

“We noticed some smoke on arrival, made entry into the building and identified the area where the fire was occurring,” McNamara said. “It was a storage room in the school, so crews managed to knock it down.”

A total of 16 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

“We do have an investigator on site right now. The cause of the fire is unclear at this moment. We do hope to get some details on that shortly on the room contents in one of the storage rooms,” McNamara added.

He says that the fire was contained to the storage room. However, since the sprinklers went off, water damage has been reported throughout the school.

A restoration company is working on fixing the problem.

McNamara says that if crews are currently working to extract the smell of the smoke.

The Surrey School District says that the elementary school will remain closed on Monday.

“Families and staff will receive further information directly from the school district regarding next steps and impacts to school operations,” the district said in a written statement.

The Surrey Police Service has confirmed that the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
