Toronto police say a 17‑year‑old driver is at the centre of a serious collision investigation after allegedly disobeying a red light and striking a pedestrian in the city’s east end Tuesday night.
The crash happened just before 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pape Avenue and Lipton Avenue, just north of Danforth Avenue.
According to investigators, the teen was driving a vehicle northbound on Pape Avenue when he allegedly failed to stop at a red traffic signal. At the same time, a 24‑year‑old man was crossing the street from west to east at the intersection. Police say the vehicle struck the pedestrian, leaving him with life‑threatening injuries.
Paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Police have not released the identity of the 17‑year‑old due to his age, but confirmed he was behind the wheel at the time of the crash. Investigators with Traffic Services are leading the probe and will determine whether charges are warranted.
Toronto police are asking local residents, businesses, and drivers who may have security or dash camera footage from the area around the time of the collision to contact investigators.
