Commuters had to deal with wintry conditions on Monday morning as most people returned to work following the holiday break.

A yellow snowfall warning was in effect for Toronto and the GTA but it has since been lifted.

Environment Canada said up to 10 cm of snow was expected to fall on Monday morning, with peak snowfall forecast between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m., before easing by afternoon.

“Although modest snowfall amounts are expected, the timing of this snow will be problematic,” the national weather agency explained in its warning. “Because the holiday season is now behind us, and traffic patterns should be closer to normal, this snow is expected to have more of an impact on the Monday morning commute.”

Environment Canada said travel would likely be challenging with visibility reduced at times, making roads and walkways difficult to navigate due to the accumulating snow.

“There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic. Visibility will likely be reduced at times.”

The statement covered a large part of southern Ontario, stretching from Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington in the west to Oshawa in the east.

Hamilton and areas east of Oshawa to Kingston were under a special weather statement, calling for between 5 and 10 cm of snowfall during the same period.
