A wanted man has been arrested and charged with robbery and assault in the university district of Waterloo.

Waterloo regional police said it happened around 7 p.m., Tuesday around University Avenue West and Phillip Street.

In a press release, officials said a man came in, picked up some merchandise and tried to leave with those items without paying.

The suspect allegedly assaulted an employee who confronted him, leaving the worker with minor injuries.

Officers found the suspect nearby, and say he gave a fake name and resisted arrest.

Police said it turned out the 36-year-old man was wanted on outstanding warrants for possession of a prohibited weapon and breach of probation.

He’s now facing new charges of robbery, resist arrest, and obstruct peace officer.
