Alleged arson temporarily closes Walmart location in Waterloo

A Walmart store in Waterloo was forced to close temporarily after a Sunday night fire that police have deemed suspicious.

The fire broke out soon after 10 p.m. at the Walmart at 70 Bridgeport Rd. E., in the plaza at Weber Street North.

A statement from the Waterloo Regional Police Service said the fire is suspicious, and they have issued a security camera image of a person they believe is connected with their ongoing investigation.

Police said no one was hurt in the fire.

A statement to 570 NewsRadio from Walmart Canada said, “This was a criminal act of arson that will unfortunately and unfairly impact our customers, associates and the local community who rely on the store.”

Walmart said the store was closed for the cleanup and repairs and reopened to customers 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.


Fire restoration teams at the Walmart at Bridgeport and Weber, around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The company statement added, “we want to thank all first responders who attended.”
