A tow truck convoy will depart the parking lot of the old Cineplex theatre on Gateway Park Drive in Kitchener, this morning at 10:30.
The procession occurs in the wake of an OPP investigation into a fatal hit-and-run of a Kitchener tow truck operator on the side of Highway 401 over a week ago.
The 42-year-old Kitchener man was assisting a stranded motorist at the side of the westbound lanes, near Oxford Road 3, when he was hit by a passing transport truck.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and police began the immediate search for the truck.
The truck was eventually located and the driver was identified, but police confirm they have no update on the investigation at this time.
In the meantime, friends, family and colleagues will gather on the weekend to remember the fallen worker.
The convoy will make its way to King Street via Tu-Lane Street before joining the westbound 401 and heading toward Woodstock.
Organizers say it will proceed to Oxford Road 2 in Woodstock, where it will turn around and make its way back to Waterloo Region. Participants from outside the region may continue westward to London, if they choose.
This will have an impact on traffic on the westbound 401, so drivers are urged to use extra patience and leave room while approaching the convoy.
The OPP, meanwhile, have been using this case to remind drivers of the province’s Move Over law.
Drivers must slow down or change lanes and slow down when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with its lights activated.
Fines start a $400 up to $2,000 for a first offence. The fines increase for repeat offenders who could also see jail time.
