Joe Gowing was appointed to the Region of Waterloo Council after dozens of applications and a vote.

The former Waterloo Catholic District School Board trustee and liberal candidate received eight votes from sitting members of council. He applied alongside 43 other applicants for the position.

Those interested in the position had to apply and then pitch to councillors why they are right for the position. The pitch took place over 4.5 hours on Aug. 14.

“On behalf of regional council, I welcome Joseph Gowing to council and look forward to working together as we continue to serve all residents by building a stronger community,” said Karen Redman, Regional Chair. “I also want to thank everyone who put their name forward for consideration. It’s inspiring to see so many ready and willing to serve our community.”

The appointment comes after the death of former councillor Kari Williams, who passed away following a long battle with cancer.

This will be the second time in 2025 that the Region of Waterloo has filled a vacant seat around the horseshoe by appointment.

Gowing will take his oath for office in the coming days and will be at his first meeting on Aug. 27.
