The Princess Original Cinema‘s 40th anniversary is on Thursday.

To celebrate the milestone, a Block Party is being held on Princess Street Thursday evening, starting with a screening of Casablanca at the Princess Original at 6:45 p.m.

Casablanca is significant to the cinema, as it was the first film ever screened at the location back on Sept. 18, 1985.

Members are able to watch for free.

Free for everyone, at 9 p.m., an outdoor screening of Stop Making Sense.

“This is a significant milestone for an independent movie house to be celebrating their 40th anniversary being a pillar of Uptown.” said Jeyas Balaskanthan, executive director of the Uptown Waterloo Business Improvement Area (BIA)

“We are immensely proud of John Tutt, his family and staff for always adding to the vibrancy of our community. We are grateful that both Princess Original now celebrating their 40th anniversary and Princess Twin Cinemas are right in the centre of Uptown, bringing diversity to our arts and culture.”

Aside from the screenings, the party itself gets underway at 6 p.m.
