An arena in Preston that’s been going through a massive redesign has quietly opened for use, without fanfare, after the grand reopening date was missed.
A statement to 570 NewsRadio from the City of Cambridge confirmed the Preston Memorial Auditorium “soft-launched” on Monday, and is now open for games and practices.
But there’s still no new date for the official grand reopening.
The city’s statement says, “There are still some finishing touches that need to be made, such as millwork wall cladding in the lobby, countertops for the concession area, installation of vending machines, and some additional painting.”
The Preston Aud was supposed to have its official post-renovation grand opening on Sept. 27.
Its $33.1 million revitalization began in the fall of 2023. The new features include a new NHL-sized rink, new washrooms and change rooms, updated seating and more.
On Sept.17, Minister of Sport, Neil Lumsden, was in Cambridge to announce extra provincial funding for arenas, including $1 million for the Preston Aud.
