A Guelph man is now facing assault charges after being arrested in the Royal City on Wednesday.
The charges stem back to an interaction between the man and Guelph Police on Monday. It was around 1:30 p.m. when officers located the man, said to be the subject of an apprehension order under the Mental Health Act.
When those officers approached the man, police say he fled and prompted a brief foot pursuit. After being stopped by police, he reportedly became aggressive and punched one of the officers in the face.
Officers struggled to get control of him; it’s alleged that he bit that same officer on the wrist hard enough to break the skin.
He was eventually detained by police, taken to hospital for medical treatment. The police officer who was the victim of the assault also sought medical treatment and requires ongoing treatment for an additional injury that was sustained to his shoulder during the exchange.
The accused, a 29-year-old from Guelph, was later located in the city’s downtown and arrested for assaulting police, as well as two counts of breaching probation orders.
