January is set to end on a cold note, with warnings in place for extreme temperatures, but the promise of a moderate warm-up for the weekend.
Environment Canada issued a yellow warning for cold for Waterloo Region on Friday morning, with wind chills that feels like -30 to -35.
“It is dangerously cold out there this morning, so make sure you layer up before you head outside because frostbite can develop in just a matter of minutes on exposed skin,” said 570’s Meteorologist Carl Lam.
A reminder from the weather service to keep any pets indoors during periods of extreme cold, and to watch for colour changes and swelling in fingers and toes.
The good news is that there is no new snow accumulation in the coming days, and the weekend promises some glimpses of sunshine.
“I’m looking at the weekend with a glass-half-full type of view because temperatures will be increasing, but I don’t really want to call it a warm-up,” added Lam.
Temperatures are set to rise to a high of -13 C on Saturday, followed by -8 C on Sunday.
