The Cambridge Food Bank says their first food locker has worked so well, they’ll be trying it out in two more locations.

The lockers are described as a way to help people who need to use the food bank, but “who cannot attend the food bank’s in-person programs due to mobility challenges, transportation barriers, or work schedules.”

The Food Bank said their first locker was at the Preston Heights Community Centre at 350 Linden Dr., and was launched earlier this year.

Two new locations are at the Allan Reuter Centre, at 507 King St. E., and the W.G. Johnson Centre, at 31 Kribs St.

Director of Operations, Amy Slack, said in a statement, “Food lockers give us another way to reach community members where they are.”

Each household can access the locker once per calendar month, to pick up the same emergency food hamper that’s available through the food bank’s in-person program.

The hampers can include “non-perishable food, frozen meat, milk, eggs, produce, bread, hygiene products, baby food, and diapers.”

The lockers are restocked every weekday, as needed.

Dianne McLeod, CEO of the Cambridge Food Bank, said, “As food insecurity continues to grow, we are finding new and innovative ways to reach members of our community so no one is left behind.”
