Halifax Regional Police say the suspect barricaded inside a home in Fairmount pointed a gun at one of its officers, and in response, police shot the man.

It first started with a release about the ongoing incident around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, warning residents of a heavy police presence in the area of Arlington Avenue and Brook Street.

Just after 6:30 a.m. Thursday, police issued an update saying the operation was still ongoing and that power had been cut to the immediate area.

“Throughout the night, the man made threats towards police. Crisis negotiators worked with the man to try to de-escalate the situation. The Emergency Response Team was deployed,” officials said in a press release.

At 7:10 a.m. police said the suspect pointed a gun at them.

Then, at 8:30 a.m. officers were able to remove a woman from the house where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries by paramedics.

About five minutes later, the man was taken into custody and was sent to hospital with serious injuries.

Nova Scotia Power reported the outage around 6:45 a.m., saying it was affecting about 750 customers in the area and as of 9:40 a.m., that outage was still active.

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency also responded to a fire call in the Arlington Avenue area around 7:20 a.m. as a precaution. RCMP also responded to the scene Thursday morning.

The police investigation continues.
