Snowfall in Calgary Monday is wreaking havoc on the city’s roads — and at the airport.
In a statement to 660 NewsRadio, Calgary airport officials says flight operations have resumed after a brief pause Monday morning due to heavy and accumulating snowfall on the airfield.
“Given the winter weather conditions, we anticipate that there will be some flight delays throughout the day,” an airport representative said. “As an airport prepared for winter, our experienced crews and specialized equipment are always ready to respond to keep our runways and taxiways clear and safe.”
Dozens of flights were delayed or cancelled, leaving travellers scrambling to adjust their plans. The airport says flight operations resumed at 9 a.m.
This, as snow continued to fall across the city throughout the morning. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has said the flurries should stop by this afternoon.
However, there could be as much as 10 centimetres on the ground by the time all is said and done. More snow is likely to fall later this week.
Among the cancellations on the departure front were WestJet flights to Atlanta, Abbotsford, Vancouver, Montego Bay, and Saskatoon.
As of 9:45 a.m. WestJet departures to Winnipeg, Regina, Toronto, Halifax, Brandon, Kamloops, Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Victoria, Fort McMurray, New York-JFK, Ixtapa, Fort Lauderdale were delayed.
Flair flights to Toronto and Abbotsford are also delayed, as were Air Canada to Ottawa and Toronto.
For those headed to YYC to pick someone up, extra patience may be required — a good majority of flights scheduled to land in Calgary Monday are either running behind, or have been cancelled altogether.
Among the cancellations are WestJet flights from Kelowna, Saskatoon, Abbotsford, Vancouver, Houston-Bush, Atlanta, and Montego Bay.
Plenty more arrivals — from both WestJet and AirCanada — are facing delays: Cranbrook, Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Kelowna, Comox, Nanaimo, Kona, Waterloo, Winnipeg, Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Dallas, San Francisco, Kamloops, Minneapolis, Liberia, Los Angeles, Chicago.
