Survivors of sexual abuse at a Calgary junior high school have just weeks left to come forward as part of a multimillion‑dollar class action settlement.
Lawyers representing former students of John Ware School say class members have until Jan. 26 to contact them and participate in the settlement process.
The lawsuit, handled by HMC Lawyers, was filed against the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and former teachers Michael Gregory and Fred Archer.
The CBE agreed to a settlement valued at nearly $16 million last year, which the courts later approved. The compensation is intended for students who were abused by the two teachers between 1988 and 2004.
Michael Gregory died several years ago, shortly after police announced charges against him. The second teacher named in the lawsuit, Fred Archer, now 80, is currently facing trial on sexual assault allegations.
Lawyers are urging anyone who was victimized while at John Ware School to come forward before the January deadline to ensure they are included in the settlement process.
