Residents of two homes in Calgary’s northeast are without a roof over their heads after a fire Sunday afternoon.
Alex Kwan with the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says around 4:40 p.m., crews were called to a two-story residential fire on Covepark Drive NE in Coventry Hills.
Multiple calls were also made to 911 reporting the blaze was spreading to a neighbouring home.
There was also heavy smoke reported.
Kwan says the decision was made at that time to call a second alarm.
Crews were able to knockdown the spreading fire with hoses and search the basement suite and other areas of the home to confirm all those living in the house where the fire started had got out safely.
Firefighters were also able to rescue two turtles and help the residents get their valuables out of the home once the fire was out.
Those living in the second house self-evacuated with their dogs.
Kwan says all occupants were displaced as both homes are classified as “unlivable.” They have been able to find accommodations with friends and family.
Enmax and ATCO attended the scene and shut off utilities to both homes. CPS and EMS ambulance also attended.
Fire crews were rotated through the night on fire watch and CFD Fire investigators attended the scene.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
