The STAR 98.3 Community Impact Spotlight is proudly sponsored by Mark’s Chilliwack, Valley Toyota, Sabrina Vandenbrink Personal Real Estate Corporation and Johnston’s Pork.

The STAR 98.3 Community Impact Spotlight for June is the Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) located at 9290 Mary Street, which provides Chilliwack with short-term loans of health equipment on a donation basis. It is 100 percent ran by volunteers and we are truly grateful for the hard work and passion they have for this program.  It takes a lot to run this office and here are some of the comments from people who have used the HELP Program.

The STAR 98.3 Community Impact Spotlight for May is an individual in our community named Shauner Erler. Shauna is a great example of someone in our community who is going above and beyond to help her neighbours. After her full-time job, she volunteers at Sardis Doorway for Mother’s & Children Society. She oversees the care of children, fills in when the Children’s Program coordinator is gone, helps shop, fundraise, and rally’s more volunteers. Karin Rempel from Sardis Doorway describes Shauna as friendly, approachable, kind and fun. Aside from her job, and volunteering, she is a wife, a mother to 4 amazing kids, and is very active at their schools and with their sports teams.

Every month, the STAR 98.3 Community Impact Spotlight features local non-profits, charities and people just like Shauna in our community who are making a difference… and its made possible from our generous partners!

The STAR 98.3 Community Impact Spotlight for April is Project AIM.

Project AIM began in 2020 based on the needs presented to in the local community. Since the very beginning they have had a goal to continue to secure funding to obtain menstrual and incontinence products to be able to meet the needs of the local community. Project AIM services people in need from Vancouver to Hope and has even serviced clients across Canada when able to. Last year (2021) with the help of local donations and partnerships they were able to provide community members with over $15,000 worth of menstrual and incontinence products, both reusable and disposable.

At Project AIM they envision a future where people who bleed and people who struggle with incontinence are given both emergency and long-lasting support to tend to their basic human needs and/or chronic medical conditions. They believe that barrier-free access should be granted to everyone – regardless of gender identity or economic status.

Project AIM does not just provide products to individual clients in the community but also has relationships with local shelters and other impactful groups that are regularly donated to. Creating connections with organizations that can get products out to more people helps up continue to strive for our goal of having access for all. They feel that the more access to these products there are, the easier it is to get them out effectively.

They will continue to do what they do until our dream of full access for menstrual and incontinence products for all people is achieved!

The STAR 98.3 Community Impact Spotlight for March is The Free Store Chilliwack.

The Free Store Chilliwack is a registered non-profit that has been running since 2019! Started by Raylene Mumford and her strong team, it continues to grow! They currently borrow spaces and give out hampers each weekend that they put together, sorting food and ensuring that nothing goes to waste! They work with local farmers to ensure they are under 2% waste! Reusing and rescuing food to ensure it all gets used, cutting down the waste and landfill while providing many families in desperate need of support.

Currently, The Free Store Chilliwack support 3600 families, feeding approximately a staggering 21,634 people in Chilliwack a year! Out of the 3600 families, 1600 are seniors and or those struggling way under poverty level. They also serve “run-aways,” families fleeing domestics and middle class families hit hard by financial crises (job loss, or life changes) that cause a significant deficit in their families. Life happens, and the Free Store team really does whatever they can do to help support families, people and community members in need. Despite working on zero funding, and a 100% volunteer base, they are so lucky to work with so many public and private donors, and the Free Store with these incredible partnerships is able to give out over $600,000 worth of items with over half of that being fresh food and groceries!

They have been able to do more than just food, including initiatives such as a “grad pop up event,” sourcing over $264,000 worth of grad gowns, suits, shoes, purses, jewelry and attire, the 123 Read to Me family literature event, helping folks get their Serving it Right, First Aid and vehicles behind the scenes, and more.
