
Five units of the Surrey Fire Service responded to a structure fire at 72nd and 144th Street in Surrey on Monday at 4:24 p.m.
According to the Mike McNamara, assistant chief of operations at the Surrey Fire Service, the units were “thoroughly involved” in extinguishing the fire.
The Surrey Fire Service confirms that nine homes were damaged in the fire.
Callers from across the Lower Mainland, including Richmond, New Westminster, and Surrey, reported to 1130 NewsRadio seeing a huge plume of black smoke rising from the Newton area.

Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment and transported one patient to hospital in stable condition.
McNamara says that five to eight families were expected to be displaced as a result of the fire.
The Surrey Fire Service says that no cause has been determined yet.
There were delays for drivers in the area, especially near the intersection of 144 Street and 72 Avenue.
