Several arrests have been made following a stabbing at a basketball game at Eric Hamber Secondary Monday.
The update to the community came in a letter from the school’s principal that was obtained by 1130 NewsRadio.
“School staff also continue to look into the incident,” Principal Jason Lauzon said. “If students are confirmed to be involved, school level actions will reflect our focus on safety and respectful behaviour.”
Police are continuing to investigate the assault that took place during a game between Eric Hamber and Killarney Secondary School.
Fights broke out following the game, resulting in an 18-year-old boy being stabbed in the arm. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
At least one other injury was confirmed.
The exact motive of the attack is unknown, but Sgt. Steve Addison said, “I have come to the understanding that during the game, there was some tension that arose between the two schools” during a “high-stakes game with playoff implications.”
There now remains an increased police presence as well as a presence of Vancouver School Board staff in the aftermath. However, the school said the planned city championship basketball games that are scheduled at that location will continue.
“Many families plan to attend, and safety measures are in place,” Lauzon said. “VPD and VSB staff, including administrators from visiting schools, will be present to support all games this week.”
The investigation is ongoing.
