All lights at one of North America’s largest night markets went out on Saturday night, temporarily.

According to BC Hydro, an outage caused the Richmond Night Market and surrounding areas to be without power until at least 2 a.m. on Sunday morning.

“Just after 9 p.m. Saturday night, there was a power outage in north Richmond,” BC Hydro spokesperson Kyle Donaldson told 1130 NewsRadio.

Videos on social media show how the illuminated market area near the intersection of River Road and No. 3 Road suddenly went black.

Beyond the visitors at the market, 1,700 BC Hydro customers were affected by the incident.

“Our crews worked through the night to restore service, and most of the impacted customers were brought back online at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning,” Donaldson added.

No cause of the outage has been determined yet.

“It was either an equipment issue or a bird making contact with wires in the area,” Donaldson explained.
