On Thursday evening, Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) was called to the Empress Galleria at 1118 Homer Street in Yaletown.

Just after 8 p.m., VFRS responded to the call with seven fire trucks and arrived on site to find heavy smoke coming from the roof.

Crews made entry and discovered a heavy grease fire in the rooftop vent system.

“It was mostly confined to the cooking vent system and a little bit of the roof, so sprinklers didn’t activate at this time,” said Pierre Morin, Assistant Chief Operations.

“Crew went upstairs to the roof, and the office space is on the third floor. We found some fire in the roof and in the vent.”

The restaurant, Elisa, has some water and fire damage.

Crews were still on scene as of 9:45 p.m. but cleared the fire as of 10:25 p.m., reopening Homer Street.
