A man and a woman remain in hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries after they were shot following a confrontation with a male riding a bike in Toronto’s King West Village early Friday, Duty Senior Officer Todd Jocko said during an afternoon update.
Jocko, who called the shooting a “violent and brazen act,” said the victims were walking with friends when the group had a brief encounter with the suspect.
“A group of friends were walking in the area when they were approached by a male riding a bike,” he explained. “Words were exchanged and the group continued on their way.”
“A short time later, the same individual approached them again, pulled out a firearm and fired several rounds.”
Toronto Paramedic Services told CityNews they were called to the King Street West and Sudbury Street area just after 2:30 a.m. on Friday for reports of a shooting.
The victims, who are in their 30s, were rushed to hospital.
Jocko said the suspect, only described as a male riding a bike, fled westbound on Sudbury Street.
“Based on what we know so far there was some sort of interaction between the group and the suspect, we are still working to determine the exact nature of that exchange,” he said. “Right now it does not appear that they were known to each other.”
Jocko is asking anyone who may have surveillance video from the area to contact police in hopes of aiding their investigation.
