A large sinkhole closed a section of Steeles Avenue East in Brampton on Monday afternoon and it’s expected to remain closed for at least 24 hours.

Peel Regional Police say all eastbound lanes on Steeles are closed between Airport Road and Goreway Drive.

The lanes are expected to be closed until at least Tuesday afternoon as crews work to repair the watermain and roadway.

“We are currently waiting on a welder to assess whether the pipe can be repaired and if not, we’ll replace with a new section of pipe,” said Elaine Gilliland, director of Water and Wastewater Operations at the Region of Peel, in a statement to CityNews.

“If all goes as expected, we are hoping the fix is done by the end of the day.”

Police said large amounts of water were pooling on the roadway and warned drivers to avoid the area.
