A man in his 30s is dead, and a woman has been rescued after an evening jaunt to Brampton’s Heart Lake Conservation Park ended in tragedy.
Authorities say they received a report about a man and woman in distress at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday after their canoe capsized.
Emergency crews rescued a woman from the water that night, but no one else was located. Search efforts for the missing man continued into Sunday morning, and his body was eventually recovered.
Peel Regional Police Cst. Tyler Bell-Morena told reporters at the scene that they are treating the incident as suspicious and are working to rule out foul play.
“The conservation area here was closed, so technically nobody should have had access to the water, there certainly should have been nobody out on the lake boating,.” said Bell-Morena. “How they acquired the canoe, whether it was theirs or not, that is something that we are going to be looking into as well.”
Police impounded the woman’s vehicle as a precautionary measure while they continue to investigate.
Police could not say what the relationship is between the two, except that they were known to one another. They added that neither of them was wearing a life jacket at the time.
