Highway 401 near Avenue Road has reopened following a multi-vehicle crash involving a tanker trailer that forced the overnight closure of the eastbound and westbound lanes.

Provincial police say the incident occurred in the westbound lanes just after 11 p.m. It was unclear how many vehicles were involved.

Paramedics tell CityNews they transported one man to a trauma centre with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Photos from the scene showed a tanker truck blocking the westbound portion of the express lanes. The cab of the truck was on its side, and what appeared to be the liquid portion of its load was spread across the highway.

A portion of the concrete barrier separating the express lanes was also damaged, with large pieces of concrete debris strewn across the eastbound portion of the highway.

The eastbound lanes of the highway between Allen Road and Avenue Road were reopened around 3:00 a.m. Saturday, while the westbound lanes reopened around 11:00 a.m. following repairs to the barrier.
