Toronto police are searching for at least three suspects after a 27-year-old man was shot and killed just steps from his home in North York late Friday night.

Investigators were called to a townhouse complex on Sheppard Avenue West, east of Jane Street, at around 10:15 p.m. following reports that a man had been shot.

When police arrived, they found Hussein Elmi suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving measures, Elmi was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say three suspects opened fire on the victim before fleeing the scene in a dark coloured vehicle.

“Given the limited suspect description, we’re asking for any witnesses or any members of the public who were in the area last night at 10 o’clock that may have been travelling in a vehicle, or walking, that may have seen or heard anything,” said Det. Sgt. Jason Davis.

“This 27-year-old man tragically lost his life last night, and every little bit of information matters.”

Davis added he did not believe Elmi was specifically targeted.

“By all accounts, this gentleman was steps from his home; he was returning home,” explained Davis. “I have no indication whatsoever that he had any interaction with the suspects at this point in time. This gentleman, tragically, was almost home.”

Investigators would only say that “several” shots were fired. As many as half a dozen evidence markers could be seen on the ground in the area that the shooting took place.

The incident occurred just days after an early morning shooting in the same area, in which evidence of gunfire was found, and a window was damaged. No injuries were reported in that shooting.

Davis said it was too early in the investigation to say if the two shootings are connected.

This is the 11th homicide in Toronto in 2026.

Supt. Jack Gurr called the incident “deeply troubling” and “unconscionable,” noting this is the first homicide in 31 Division this year, while also appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“This is horrendous. My heart goes out to the family,” he said.

“I know there are people out there that do know who did this, who pulled that trigger, and I would ask you, please, please contact us right away so we can make our community feel safe.”
