A 77-year-old Mississauga man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle on Highway 401 while examining damage from a separate collision that occurred moments earlier.

Emergency crews were called to eastbound Highway 401 near Dixon Road around 5 a.m. Saturday morning for reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

“An SUV and a tractor-trailer were involved in a collision,” explained Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt. “The driver of that SUV exited their vehicle, and the person was subsequently struck by another passing vehicle.”

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Two other people from the scene were also transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The eastbound Highway 401 at Dixon Road was closed for several hours for the investigation until reopening early Saturday afternoon.
