A 68-year-old man was rushed to a hospital late Wednesday evening following a residential fire in Vaughan.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Ellerby Square North and Kipling Avenue just after 10:45 p.m. to battle the blaze.

Deputy Fire Chief Grant Moffatt told reporters at the scene Thursday morning that fire fighters faced high heat and heavy smoke as they searched the property.

One man was found inside the home without vital signs and was evacuated. He was transported to a hospital by paramedics, where he remains in critical condition.

“We had one other person who had called it in,” Moffatt explained. “They had self-rescued.”

“I was here last night and didn’t hear any smoke alarms sounding at the time,” he added.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown and an investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal is ongoing.
