Special weather statements and freezing rain warnings marked the arrival of spring in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) on Friday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada had issued a yellow warning for freezing rain on Friday morning for Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Halton Hills and Milton, saying these areas could see ice buildup of two to five millimetres.

The warning has since ended for all areas.

The system arrived in Toronto and nearby regions on Friday morning.

Precipitation across the GTA transitioned to rain later in the day as temperatures rose above the freezing mark.

Toronto was under a special weather statement for the potential of snow, ice pellets or freezing rain, but it has since lifted. It has also ended for Pickering, Oshawa and southern Durham Region.

Damp spring ahead in Toronto and the GTA

CityNews chief meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai explains that spring won’t only mean rain for areas near the Great Lakes.

“We’ll likely see still a lot of mixed precipitation, possibly still some flurries, freezing rain and ice pellets … at least for the first half of spring, or at least the rest of March, and then that will transition to rain here as we go through April and May,” she said.
