Provincial police are investigating a fatal collision on Highway 401 that involved at least three transport trucks early Monday morning.

According to investigators, the crash happened around 6:00 a.m. in the Clarington area.

Officers say traffic on the eastbound lanes of the highway were stopped and slowed down for collision at Liberty Street.

“A transport truck rear-ended a stopped transport truck in lane 3, then continued on sideswiping another transport truck in lane 3,” provincial police wrote in a social media post.

Authorities say one driver — a 29-year-old man from Brampton — was pronounced dead at the scene. However, no other details were released.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for more than several hours between Highway 418 and Holt Road and reopened just before 1:00 p.m.

Whitby OPP are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
