A landmark bridge in Woolwich Township is the target of significant investment and upgrades from the Region of Waterloo.

The West Montrose Covered Bridge, known locally as the “Kissing Bridge,” is set to undergo upgrades over the next year and four months, improving the structure and aesthetic of the bridge.

First built in 1881, the bridge was a place for local couples to go and quietly share affection. However, it hasn’t been upgraded since the 1990s and is in need of repairs to extend its lifespan.

The Region of Waterloo is investing $12 million in the project.

The work on the bridge, which started on Wednesday, will decrease sag, remove the steel trusses, and replace the floor beams, but the region is committed to maintaining the landmark’s classic feel that people in West Montrose and beyond have come to know and love.

According to the region, while the work is underway, Letson Park will be closed as it will be used as a staging area, adding that two-way traffic will be maintained on Rivers Edge Drive and Covered Bridge Drive.

Locals will have to detour around the bridge closure on Line 86, which is a road with speed limits of 80 km/h and 90 km/h, a different drive to the quiet commute over the bridge.

According to the Region of Waterloo, the bridge will remain closed until December 2026, adding that weather and project scope could affect that timeline.
