
After a devastating shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northeastern British Columbia, voices from across the country and in Waterloo Region have begun to offer condolences.
“Guelph stands with their entire community, the families impacted and hopes for the speedy recovery of all injured,” said Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie in a post on social media. “We think of all the first responders and pray for healthcare providers as they continue to try and save lives.”
In Kitchener, Mayor Berry Vrbanovic took to social media, echoing similar sentiments from the city.
“We extend our deepest condolences to everyone impacted, including those who have lost loved ones, those who have been injured, the students and staff at Tumbler Ridge High School, and the wider British Columbia community,” he said.
In his post, Mayor Vrbanovic also gave a shoutout to the RCMP in B.C., along with all first responders, and Mayor Darryl Krakowka and other community leaders who are continuing to push through the difficult situation.

Waterloo Region District School Board issued a release, saying that it will be working to support students and staff as families become more informed about the situation in B.C.
“We hold the families who have lost loved ones and the many who were injured in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time,” the public board’s statement reads. “This event will impact students, staff, families and caregivers across Waterloo Region and as a school board we will continue to use a trauma-informed and responsive approach to create compassionate school communities that support WRDSB students, staff, families and caregivers.”
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board also issued a statement, saying the actions of the shooter have left a deep wound not only in that community but across the country.
“In moments like this, words feel too small. We pray for the families who are grieving, for those tending to the injured, and for everyone whose sense of safety has been shaken. Please know you are not alone.” It goes on to say, “Schools should be places of curiosity, care, and connection. They should be spaces where each day begins with possibility and ends with the comfort of returning home to those who care most. Today, we reaffirm that belief and hold close everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.”
