A dangerous evening on the roads for cyclists across Waterloo Region, with two separate crashes sending cyclists to hospital within the span of just a few hours.
Both took place later in the day on Friday, with the first happening at around 4 p.m. in the area of Colby Drive and Wyman Road in Waterloo.
Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) said emergency services were called after reports of a Kia motor vehicle colliding with a cyclist as it was making its way through the intersection.
The 32-year-old man from Waterloo, who was on the bicycle, needed to be sent to an out-of-region hospital after being seriously injured in the crash. The driver of the Kia, a 26-year-old man from Kitchener, was unharmed.
Later that evening, at around 8 p.m., regional police were called about another collision involving a cyclist, this one in Kitchener.
Officers said it happened at the intersection of University Avenue West and Fischer-Hallman Road, needing to close the intersection for multiple hours as the initial investigation got underway.
They said it happened in a manner in line with the first crash, where a Toyota Highlander collided with an e-bike as it was making its way through the intersection.
The cyclist, a 16-year-old from Kitchener, was sent to an out-of-region hospital for treatment. No details have been provided as to the extent of his injuries.
Similarly to the first incident, the 47-year-old man from Waterloo, who was driving the Toyota, did not sustain any physical injuries.
In both cases, WRPS said investigations remain underway for both collisions through its Traffic Services Unit. It asks that anyone who witnessed either or has dash-cam footage contact regional police at 519-570-9777, extension 8856.
