The Food Bank of Waterloo Region launched its Spring Food and Fund Drive this week, seeking support as demand for food assistance sits at “historic levels”. I

Around one in nine households in the region are accessing food support currently, the food bank says. Month to month, approximately 73,000 people, including children, rely on the Community Food Assistance Network as inflation continues to rise. The food bank is reaching out to the community to help offset the rising need locally.

“Every spring, our community shows up in incredible ways—donating food and funds, hosting drives, and finding creative ways to give back,” Kim Wilhelm, CEO of The Food Bank of Waterloo Region, said in a press release. “But right now, the need is higher than ever, and many people are needing support month after month.”

Wilhelm said the food bank is aiming to raise 120,000 meals by June 20. Every dollar donated can provide two nutritious meals for someone in need.

The community is invited to donate funds online through the food bank’s website, thefoodbank.ca/donate or start their own spring food drives.

The community can also get involved by participating or donating at one of the food bank’s local events.
