A messy winter system prompted a weather warning for Waterloo Region, with freezing rain, ice and snow in the forecast on Tuesday.
According to Environment Canada, freezing rain will develop in the morning and continue for several hours before changing to snow in the evening. The freezing rain may be mixed with snow or ice pellets at times, and one to five millimetres of ice accretion or build-up is possible.
As the low-pressure system moves across precipitation is anticipated to change to snow, the weather agency notes.
Roadways, walkways and other surfaces may become hazardous and slippery due to the conditions.
Initially, a special weather statement was issued due to the forecast, but that was later upgraded to a yellow warning for freezing rain.
This will be the second day in a row that the weather is expected to cause headaches to commuters. The week started off with some poorly timed snow on the Monday commute. A special weather statement was in effect for 5-10 cm of snow for the region, but was dropped just before 8 a.m.
This prompted the City of Cambridge to declare a snow event in place as of 12 p.m. Monday. It is in effect until noon Tuesday, Jan. 6.
It means no on-street parking is allowed during that time to allow for snowplows to clear city streets.
Any vehicles on the road could be ticketed and/or towed.
Looking ahead, rain and warmer temperatures are in the forecast going into the weekend which prompted a flood outlook statement to be issued by the Grand River Conservation Authority.
