Almost two years after a fire destroyed an iconic racquet club in Waterloo, a new one is set to take its place.
The Club at Northfield is expected to open their doors on Oct. 1, located at 155 Northfield Dr., the site of the former Greystone Club.
Hillary Salvian, co-owner of the new club, said its opening will help meet an unmet demand for racquet sports in the area left after the fire.
“It’s been missed, I can say that,” she said. “People are just so eager to get back in and start doing the activities they love doing and really reforming that sense of community.”
Salvian added that she previously worked in the golf management field for 10 years, as well as a few years in sales.
“I really missed working in that club environment and being face-to-face with the membership and providing that special level of service you can only get in that environment.”
The Greystone Club closed after a fire in December 2023. The extent of the fire damage at the time was around $1 million, but Marsland Centre Limited, the owners of the building, confirmed the damage was in excess of $11 million. The relationship with the previous owners has also been severed.
The new club will feature six pickleball courts, five tennis courts, five single squash courts and a double squash court. Other additions to the club include a weight room, spin studio, group fitness studio and dedicated yoga space.
Salvian said one goal is to bring back the family friend environment to the club.
“We would really like to put an emphasis on having some strong junior programming across the board and really foster a space for families and people of all ages to come and enjoy themselves,” said Salvian.
Currently, the owners are putting the finishing touches on the club before moving in. Memberships at the club will range from $145 to $255 a month.
