Waterloo Regional Police (WRPS) have provided more details about an investigation at the University of Waterloo (UW), stemming from the discovery of an inert grenade on a theft suspect.
According to police, officers were called to the main campus around 6 a.m. Tuesday to investigate a theft.
UW Special Constables had spotted a man riding around campus on a bicycle that had previously been reported stolen.
The UW constables arrested the man and in the process, located what police describe as an ‘inert grenade’, which prompted the investigation by WRPS.
University staff, students and faculty received a notification through the campus emergency notification system just before 8 a.m. of an “active investigation,” noting there were no immediate concerns to public safety. That alert was cleared less than an hour later.
