When a Waterloo resident sold some power tools through an online buy-and-sell, they were given 18 crisp one-hundred-dollar bills—and police say every single one was a fake.

The victim called the Waterloo Regional Police Service on Wednesday after meeting with a buyer who took the tools for $1,800 cash.

But police said the money turned out to be counterfeit.

They’re investigating, but in the meantime, police remind anyone looking to sell something for cash that the Bank of Canada has some counterfeit prevention information they should review.

As for other ways to keep yourself safe when meeting with a buyer from a sale made online, police recommend:

  • Choose a well-lit, public location with surveillance cameras
  • Bring a friend or let others know when and where your meeting is taking place
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and be cautious of last minute changes to meeting locations
  • If anything appears suspicious, contact police immediately
