The birthplace of one of the most successful food companies in Canada could be getting a heritage designation by the City of Kitchener.

The building at 130 Weber St. W., at the corner of Briethaupt Street, is the site of the original home of what is now Dare Foods.

A possible heritage designation for the address was discussed at last week’s Kitchener heritage committee meeting.

Committee members heard about how the business began in 1892 when C.H. Doerr started making cookies at the back of his grocery store at 130 Weber St.

The cookie company operated at the site until a fire in 1943 destroyed the original Dare plant on that corner.

After the fire, the original building that’s up for heritage designation was taken over by Caya Fabrics in 1947.

Committee chair, Councillor Jean Haalboom, shared nostalgic memories at the meeting about how Caya Fabrics and the clothes she used to have that were made from their products, adding, “I was really sorry when that fabric company left our city.”

The final decision to approve the heritage designation for the building comes up at the Kitchener city council meeting on June 29.
