Regional police are getting closer to completing their checklist of all the local municipalities and the region for approvals in its CCTV camera program.
Before this week is over, the police service could have approvals in place with the Region of Waterloo and the City of Kitchener.
The plan includes installing 52 cameras in 10 locations across the region, looking to gain more sets of eyes for use in investigations.
Regional police have commitments in place with the City of Waterloo and the Township of North Dumfries; the Township of Wilmot council decided to hold off on putting an agreement with the police service in place.
Those agreements are in place so that the police service can use region and city-owned lands and infrastructure, specifically hydro poles, to host the CCTV cameras.
The police service is looking to enter one-year agreements with each of the municipalities, townships and the region. Those agreements would renew automatically for the next 15 years, but any municipality that prefers to exit the agreement would be required to give the service 60 days’ notice.
A report heading to regional council on Tuesday offers some insight into the locations where these cameras will be placed. A map included in the report lists Downtown Galt, Hespeler Road, Downtown Kitchener, Fairview Mall, Uptown Waterloo, and the intersection of King Street and University Avenue.
City of Kitchener council will consider implementing the program at a council meeting on Monday.
