Region of Waterloo Public Health inspectors and pest control have been brought in to Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener after reports of an insect found in food purchased at the food court.

A post in a local food Facebook group on Sunday shows photos of what appears to be a cockroach in a dish purchased at the Fairview Park Mall food court.

In an email statement to 570 NewsRadio, Fairview Park General Manager Vladimir Blagovcanin said the mall is “committed to maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and cleanliness across our property.”

“Upon receiving a recent complaint, we immediately engaged our third-party pest control provider and implemented the necessary measures to address the concern,” added Blagovcanin.

“Cleanliness is a shared responsibility, and we continue to work closely with all our tenants to uphold rigorous standards. We remain fully committed to resolving this matter quickly, safely, and effectively, and to ensuring the continued comfort and well-being of our shoppers and community.”

Blagovcanin noted the mall conducts regular inspections and “as with any property that includes food-service establishments, occasional issues can arise.”

Region of Waterloo Public Health confirmed to 570 NewsRadio they were made aware of the case.

“We are aware of a report of an insect found in a food item,” read a statement to 570 NewsRadio. “We are continuing to follow up to verify that corrective actions are being taken.”

An inspector has already been on site to investigate, and continues to work with the food operator.
