Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) closed all eastbound lanes of Highway 401 through Drumbo for nine hours during this latest snowstorm to hit southern Ontario.

It had drivers stranded in the eastbound lanes while a crash was cleared, and icy conditions continued. One of them told 570 NewsRadio that he was trying to take his sick child to Toronto.

OPP posted about the closure shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday.

During the nine-hour closure, no drivers were able to move along the eastbound lanes, with some using coats and extra blankets to keep warm.

An orange snow squall alert is in effect for the area warning of extremely hazardous travel conditions.
