The Grand River Conservation Authority has updated the flood messaging issued earlier on Wednesday.

West Montrose is now under an upgraded Flood Warning.

According to the GRCA, river flows have reached Flood Warning Zone 2 and may reach Flood Warning Zone 3 in West Montrose. Municipal flood coordinators in the Township of Woolwich have been told to notify affected properties.

The GRCA has also issued Flood Warnings for Brant County, Brantford, Six Nations and Halidmand County.

This comes after a Flood Watch was issued for West Montrose, St. Jacobs, Drayton, Grand Valley and Kitchener overnight, with thunderstorms and more rain expected in the coming days.

The GRCA issued a flood warning for the communities on top of its flood watch for the rest of the Grand River watershed. Monday brought widespread showers and thunderstorms to the region, raising water levels, which is expected to continue as more systems make way across the province.

According to the authority, about 30 millimetres of heavy rain has fallen across the Grand River watershed in 24 hours.

Thunderstorms Tuesday evening brought more torrential downpours across Waterloo Region.

“While projected totals vary, most forecasts call for 40 to 50 mm of rain over the next few days,” the statement reads.

Environment Canada notes that rain showers are persistent for the rest of the week after Wednesday, coupled with humid temperatures around 20 C.

This comes as the areas north of the region have seen riverbanks overflowing, including in Cambridge and Ayr.

Previous flood warnings in West Montrose paused rehabilitation efforts on the area’s covered bridge, a social media post from the municipality reads. Crews are set to return once river levels reduce.

Data from the Grand River shows flow rates were extremely high in the region in mid-March. (GRCA)
