Intense thunderstorms and heavy rain brought 20-50 mm of rain to Waterloo Region over the past few days and more is on the way.

The conditions prompted the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) to issue a flood warning for Kitchener, West Montrose, Ayr and New Hamburg.

“With more rain in the forecast, another 20 mm of precipitation is expected on Wednesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 16,” said GRCA officials.

“Some areas may see higher rainfall totals due to thunderstorms. River levels are increasing as a result of this event and may further increase due to additional rainfall.”

Since Monday, numerous weather alerts in place calling for heavy rain, with pooling and ponding an issue for drivers multiple mornings in a row.

Another special weather statement was issued late Wednesday morning, with Environment Canada calling for another 20 to 50 mm of rain through Thursday.

In Waterloo, a portion of Albert Street was closed due to the roadway disappearing under a river of water.

Just outside of Heidelberg, a portion of Kressler Road was closed down for several days due to flooding.

Wednesday morning, Rob Kuhn with Environment Canada reported 17.5 mm of rain in Kitchener’s Stanley Park area following just one particularly intense thunderstorm between 2:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.

Shortly after the storm finished with Waterloo Region on Wednesday, it moved towards the Greater Toronto Area. Traffic callers to 570 NewsRadio reported visibility issues in the heavy rain and slick roadways.

“A large amount of water, people are spinning out, there are about six cars on the shoulder,” said one caller.
