Anyone hoping to head out to Conestogo Lake through the remaining weeks of summer will have to stay out of the water. The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has announced its beaches will be closed for the remainder of the season.
It comes due to further reports of blue-green algae found across the local lake, creating hazards for lake-goers.
The GRCA said it consulted with WDG Public Health, which has recommended the beach closure due to the observation of blue-green algae.
The water levels in the Conestogo Lake reservoir have also already been lower than normal as a result of the Conestogo Dam rehabilitation project.
The closure of the beaches spreads to its boat launches in the area as well, but states that boating will still be permitted across the lake for the time being.
The GRCA has issued reminders for anyone who may be spending time near the lake this summer:
- Avoid swimming in the lake;
- Keep children and pets away from the algae;
- Avoid contact with the algae;
- Don’t eat fish from the lake; and
- Don’t use the water for drinking or any other purpose.
