The arrival of clouds and rain in the region has now brought some relief from the heat, leading to the cities and townships lifting temporary fire bans.

The Townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich have joined the cities of Kitchener and Cambridge in lifting temporary open air burn bans set in place in early August.

The ban were initiated following several weeks of hot and humid weather at the end of July leading into August.

All municipalities said burn bans could be implemented again if conditions change, and weather forecasts will be monitored closely. The bans were put in place after lengthy stretches of hot, humid weather across Waterloo Region.

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on the social media pages of their city or township for any updates or changes.

The bans will be lifted as of 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Even though the bans will be lifted, you are still reminded to take extra precautions when a backyard fire is in place.

These includes:

  • Closely monitoring your fire and extinguishing it when you’re finished
  • Always having a water source like a hose or pail nearby
  • Only burning bush material, including tree limbs, branches, or logs made for fireplaces
  • Keeping fires 5 metres away from fences, structures, hedges, etc.

The full list of details and further information on any future temporary fire bans can be found on the City of Kitchener website.
