It began as a call to police about an assault in Cambridge, but it ended with a man allegedly running into the Grand River trying to get away.

A call came in to the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) a little before 4:30, Saturday afternoon, about an assault from somewhere around Coronation Boulevard.

Officers found a vehicle connected to the call and pulled it over into a parking lot on the roadway. But they said in a press release, as the vehicle was coming to a stop, a male suspect fled from the passenger side of the car and ran toward the river.

Police said he went right into the water, and although officers kept trying to get him out, in the end the Cambridge Fire Department had to get him to back shore.

An official with the fire department tells 570 NewsRadio they performed “a technical water rescue” with their airboat.

As a result, police said a 34-year-old Cambridge man is now facing 13 charges, including assault, assault with a weapon, failing to comply with a release order, and mischief under $5,000.

Police confirmed to 570 NewsRadio that it was a domestic dispute, with a female victim who suffered minor injuries after the accused threw an item, striking the victim.
