The summer months can be exceedingly difficult for families facing food insecurity.

Many rely on school meal and snack programs, but those programs don’t run in the summer months.

That creates added costs for families whose budgets are already tight. The Cambridge Food Bank (CFB) is launching its “School’s Out, Hunger’s Not” summer food and fund drive.

It aims to make sure kids and families have access to nutritious meals through the summer months.

“Throughout the summer, the Cambridge Food Bank provides emergency food assistance to help thousands of families access the nutritious food they need,” explained Dianne McLeod, CEO, CFB, in a statement. “This support helps ease financial pressure and ensures parents don’t have to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table,” she added.

According to CFB, in the first five months of 2026, the organization supported 2,747 children. That represents a nine per cent increase over the same time last year.

While the CFB provides food assistance, it also offers youth programming. Giving young people a place to feel belonging, socialize, and build friendships. It also provides health meals and snacks.

Community members are encouraged to get involved. People can make a financial donation, help organize a food drive, or help spread awareness of CFB and its programs.

Every dollar raised stays in the community, helping people and families in Cambridge and North Dumfries.
